Demonstrations inspired by Washington-Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference speakers. Help plant the SOU Food Pantry which provides free food to SOU students with food insecurities. University farms support students and local economy. We will discuss how SOU is using similar practices at The Farm at SOU. Our compost builds soil and is a renewable resource. Pesticide exposure is one of the contributing factors to colony collapse disorder. Honey can be analyzed for pesticides to show the most recent profile of pesticides honey bees are exposed to. Efficient and accurate analysis of honey is essential for knowing the extent of pesticides bees are exposed to. The QuEChERS method with LC-MS is an effective way to separate and detect pesticides while minimizing time and reagent use.
I will be presenting my capstone research project for my Biology and Chemistry degrees. I am focusing on the effect of storage time and farming practices on the fatty acid profile of chicken eggs. This study shows the rate of degradation of fatty acids over time and how the diet, environment of the chickens, and method of storage impacts this. It also shows the difference in nutritional content of washed vs. unwashed eggs over an 8 week storage time.
Cannabis is now legal for medical and/or recreational use in 29 US states and the District of Columbia. Current literature indicates that pesticide residues in cannabis products is pervasive, due to lax or unenforced state quality control mandates. This study aims to determine the extent of pesticide contamination of dried cannabis flowers and cannabis concentrates grown/sold in Oregon.
